What Happens if Spinal Stenosis Is Left Untreated?

Mild lumbar spinal stenosis can stay stable for years and isn’t dangerous to “watch” if symptoms are tolerable. Untreated, symptoms may slowly worsen — shorter walking distance, more leg pain and numbness. In the neck, untreated significant stenosis with cord compression (myelopathy) is more concerning and can cause lasting problems, so it’s evaluated more urgently.

Lumbar stenosis

Usually a quality-of-life issue, not an emergency; treatment is driven by how much it limits walking and daily life.

Cervical stenosis

When it compresses the spinal cord, progression can be harder to reverse — hand clumsiness, balance and gait changes warrant prompt care.
